My Experience

Shortly after the birth of my daughter Avery in 2016, I was reckoning with how I could use my knowledge and skills that I had learned in preparation for that time around. It was my second pregnancy and I was trying for a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). I just knew too much not to share with others about how to get a positive experience. I had a traumatic first birth with my son Jackson, going from immediate intense labor pains to the hospital (8cm), back labor, pushing to no avail due to a posterior positioned baby,

About 11 months later (2017), I took a training through DONA and began booking clients (for free, rookie mistake). After I attended my first birth a couple short months later, I knew my calling was clear. That birth was a full immersion of what I was getting myself into, but I wanted that birth junkie high all the time, even in the throes of my own postpartum.

I love to learn and glean all that I can about pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Over the years, I have taken many birth-related classes and trainings. My favorite aspect is that no birth is the same, there is always something new to adjust to, learn, or be a part of. I could do this work for years supporting hundreds of birthing families and there will always be an opportunity to learn and grow.

I have mentored many new doulas unofficially throughout the years and they continually say, "You should be a mentor"! I have been teaching childbirth education at a local hospital as well.

Mentorship is more than supporting a new doula in their journey, it is my way of giving back to the birth community. By sharing my experience and knowledge, I can help doulas navigate the unknowns, so they can focus more energy into themselves and their clients as they go through the process of setting up a successful doula business.

Why do I want to mentor Doulas?

After taking my first doula training in July 2017, I rushed home to start my business. Very shortly after, I realized that there was a LOT of work to be done & I didn't know how to do it. How do I book clients? WHERE do I find clients? What is my pricing structure? How do I conduct an interview process? What tax write-offs can I use? Will clients hire me if I have very little birth experience? I was lost as to how to even begin.
So, I trudged through my first couple years trying to make a living with my doula business. At a MOPS lunch meeting, an acquaintance I had recently met mentioned that she was a doula and could get me a job at a local hospital. I applied and worked there for about 18 months and that's where I was able to get my "reps" in. I was able to experience all types of birth, figure out how best to engage with clients, nurses and providers. By 2020, I was ready to blast out on my own and establish myself in the community as an experienced doula in her own right!
Without the hardship of trying to do it all on my own, to now running a business where I cannot take on more clients without taxing my own life force, I feel very successful in the doula game. I want to give back to my community through guiding doulas, who guide others on their pregnancy, birth and postpartum journeys.
And I would love to help YOU.
